Sauvie Island Wildlife Area
Just 20 minutes east of downtown Portland, Sauvie Island Wildlife Area is a tranquil place to experience nature. The area was established in 1947 in order to protect wetland habitats and has expanded to the current size of 12,000 acres. With 275 species of birds, 37 species of mammals, 12 species of reptiles and amphibians, and plentiful fish species, the area is a great place to hunt, fish, birdwatch, and take photographs.
A permit is required to park in the wildlife area lot. Alcohol is prohibited between May 1 and September 30. Facilities are limited, but nearby Howell Territorial Park has picnic areas and restrooms.
