The city of Glendive, located along the Yellowstone River, is home to just over 5,000 people and is known as the Gateway to Makoshika. Originally founded in 1881 by the Northern Pacific Railway, Glendive acted as a stop along the transcontinental railroad.
Today, the town offers a quaint downtown area with several shops and restaurants. Access to the river draws in many summer visitors each year, with activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, and searching for the famous paddlefish of the Yellowstone River. Visitors can take in the history of Glendive by participating in the North Side Historic Walking Tour, which takes you through residential areas and across the historic Bell Street Bridge.
Glendive is a major stop along the Montana Dinosaur Trail. Makoshika State Park, located within city limits, is a hotspot for dinosaur fossils. The visitor center even has a full Triceratops skull that was discovered in the park.
Additionally, during the summer, locals and visitors alike can stop by farmers markets, festivals, and educational events at the park. Fair season brings in people from all over to participate in rodeos, live music, and agricultural activities.
